Utho Ngathi
Disability Projects

Over the past 23 years Utho Ngathi Disability Projects and its predecessor organisation, Disadvantaged Children’s Outreach Programme, have worked with Persons with Disabilities and their Families to bridge a gap that exists between what is available and not available to achieve the ultimate goal of inclusion and the holistic development of persons with disabilities. The priority of all our projects is the Inclusion and holistic support of Persons with Disabilities and their families in Southern Africa. It is estimated that more than 35 million persons with disabilities are living in the Southern African Region - with a population of 355 million in 15 countries, that means at least 10 percent of the total population.

Persons with disabilities are often socially excluded and inclusion is hardly talked about. Disability is caused by many factors, including malnutrition and disease, crime, environmental hazards, industrial and road accidents and the number of persons with disabilities continues to increase. Often they are living in homes and community environments, where there is lack of knowledge or access to basic services, and they are hardly ever given the same treatment as the other members of the community.

The Zulu expression of Utho Ngathi means “I am someone because of you, and you are someone because of me”, and embodies the concept that "we are all of value to each other" This drives our vision to "unleash the potential of a million people with disabilities in Southern Africa."

OUR
PHILOSOPHY

Utho Ngathi’s key focus is to enhance the quality of life of persons with disabilities and to make inclusion a reality for their lives. Utho Ngathi aims to stress the importance of including rather than excluding persons with disabilities from family and community life. It also aims to provide the necessary support services to enable persons with disabilities to reach their full potential. The Road to Changes Program is designed for the inclusion and integration of persons with disabilities into society’s mainstream activities.
